canon D5 MkII

My Early Experiences with the Canon 5D Mkii
I couldn't resist the chatter on video sites and throughout the internet about the Canon 5d mkii. In late December, I bought one, selling off all my Olympus equipment to pay for it. Of course, my Olympus lenses were no longer suitable either, so one by one they were sold on Ebay. Now I have the camera body, and five Canon lenses. They are the 50 mm f1.8, the 16-24mm wide angle, the 28-70mm f2.8 and the 70-200m f2.8 with image stabilization. I hope to be using this equipment in future wedding videos. There is an opportunity for some great shots, mostly during the dances and speeches.

The Canon 5D MkII has an astonishing ability to shoot good looking video even under adverse lighting conditions, like a reception or dance. You can increase the ISO to ridiculous levels without encountering noise.

Of course the camera is an odd ball. It shoots at 30 frames per second...not 29.97. It saves its files in the H264 codec which means they need to be converted to edit well in Final Cut Pro. I have also discovered that you must convert that 30F to 29.97 if you want to view the output of FCP through a Matrox converter to a Sony Bravia LCD TV... In other words there are a whole lot of gottchas to working with this camera as a videocam. But it is worth it.
