8th Annual Strolling of the Heifers Summer 2009

Vermont's wackiest, early summer Event is the annual strolling of the heifers, through downtown Brattleboro. (Heifers are young cows that have not yet had a calf). Unfortunately, only few cows and heifers actually participate in the parade. What you do see is a celebration of Vermont Agriculture, from tractors to wagons, clowns and marching bands.

The 2008 Bridgewater Homemade Raft Race

Every year in early May homemade raft enthusiasts compete in a three mile race down the Ottauquechee river in central Vermont. The water is very cold because it contains snow melt from the nearby Killington ski resort. About 50 rafts are entered each year. In order to compete, your raft must be homemade. No commercial rafts or boats are allowed. The race begins when a homemade cannon is fired from above the river at Bridgewater Corners. Although it was a bit out of focus I thought it important to keep this clip, showing the cannon maker taking cover behind a tree! I have been told he used too much gun powder. The cannon flew into the air as you can see.

Evening Balloon Glow and Early Morning launch at the Quechee Balloon Festival and Crafts Fair

Balloonists perform to music at the Quechee Balloon Festival. Balloon Glows are tricky; the balloon can become overheated and all that hot air makes the balloon want to float away. For this reason, balloonists cannot apply their propane burners for more than about 30 seconds at a time.

Young Vermont cows (heifers) parade through downtown Brattleboro. This popular and somewhat quirky event draws a big crowd. In addition to the heifers, there are floats and bands and a slew of agricultural exhibits. Some of the bands are really good. The annual event is usually held in the first weekend in June.
