Click here to view larger video of Evening Balloon Glow at the Quechee Balloon Festival and Crafts Fair Balloonists perform to music at the Quechee Balloon Festival. Balloon Glows are tricky; the balloon can become overheated and all that hot air makes the balloon want to float away. For this reason, balloonists cannot apply their propane burners for more than about 30 seconds at a time. The water is very cold because it contains snow melt from the nearby Killington ski resort. About 50 rafts are entered each year. In order to compete, your raft must be homemade. No commercial rafts or boats are allowed. The race begins when a homemade cannon is fired from above the river at Bridgewater Corners. Although it was a bit out of focus I thought it important to keep this clip, showing the cannon maker taking cover behind a tree! I have been told he used too much gun powder. The cannon flew into the air as you can see.
