This annual event draws about 40,000 people! It not only features a parade of a few heifers...no there are not that many and the number seems to be declining. Despite a report by the Brattleboro Reformer that 100 cows were in the parade, there weren't even half that number. So don't expect to see a lot of heifers or cows in this parade. Most of the parade in 2009 was composed of children on floats, marching bands and a parade of antique tractors. The Brattleboro Green was filled with exhibitors and a milking competition. Senator Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., never misses the milking competition, but he has never won it either. He says the Strolling of the Heifers is indispensable for Vermont.
"It's important that we focus on the 200-year-old tradition of agriculture in this state," says Senator Sanders. We have a short companion video here of the milking competition.
Ben and Jerrys gave out free ice cream and of course Cabot Cheese was there giving out free cheese.
If you missed this event, here are next year's dates for Strolling of the Heifers Weekend 2010: June 4, 5 and 6 (Parade: June 5, 2010, 10 a.m., downtown Brattleboro).
